Physical Therapist Assistant Program
San Juan College offers an On-Campus and Online Hybrid Physical Therapist Assistant Program leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. This program emphasizes the didactic and clinical skills necessary to become a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). Students who successfully complete the program will earn an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and be eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) for Physical Therapist Assistants. Program graduates may continue their education toward a baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapist Assistant or various PTA Advanced Proficiency Pathways through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Becoming a PTA is not a stepping stone to becoming a PT. However, there are “bridge” programs in the United States that may allow for a transition from a PTA to a DPT with specific additional requirements. Please contact the Physical Therapist Assistant Program for further information at (505) 566-3562, pta@sanjuancollege.edu, or visit https://www.sanjuancollege.edu/health-science/physical-therapist-assistant/.
The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). CAPTE can be contacted at 3030 Potomac Ave., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22305-3085; Telephone: (800) 999-2782; Email: accreditation@apta.org; Website: http://www.capteonline.org.

On-Campus and Online/Hybrid Program
Admission into the Physical Therapist Assistant program is limited and selective. Each program (on-campus/traditional format and online/hybrid format) accepts 20 students per year. Students accepted into these selective admission programs must follow the required course sequence outlined below in order to remain in and complete the program. All students are expected to complete full-time (40-hour work week) clinical externships as outlined on the course sequence. Online/Hybrid Students: Students accepted into the Online PTA Program must travel to San Juan College for the lab portion of the online courses. Travel is required during 5 consecutive semesters starting with the Fall semester that the student is admitted to the program. Students must be present at the San Juan College campus for approximately 7 -16 consecutive days (including weekends) for each lab course, respectively. Students are responsible for any travel costs including transportation and lodging. Virtual Proctoring and/or live proctoring services will be used throughout the PTA Program for all exams. Both services provide identity verification, room scans, and proctoring to ensure exam integrity and academic honesty. The Online/Hybrid students are responsible for the fees related to this service when used. Pricing may vary depending on the virtual proctoring service obtained by the college. Course Sequence for On-Campus and Online/Hybrid Students:
The sequence for the prerequisite courses (Fall 1 through Spring 1) is suggested. The sequence for the PTAP courses (Fall 2 through Spring 3) is required. Students who for any reason are unable to follow the suggested course sequence should contact an academic advisor for help with adjustments. |
