The Associate of Science degree in General Engineering is intended to prepare students for transfer to a four-year baccalaureate granting institution. Those wishing to transfer to a baccalaureate granting institution and pursue a degree program are strongly encouraged to check with their advisor and carefully coordinate their coursework at San Juan College with the requirements of the transfer institution.

General Education Requirements

ENGL-111 Freshman Composition 3 cr.
ENGL-211 Advanced Composition 3 cr.
Although the NM General Education Core includes oral communication, the engineering core replaces this with the option of taking technical writing in place of oral communication. This is because accreditation requirements for engineering programs (accreditation is through ABET, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) mandate substantial oral communication content, which is incorporated by most engineering programs into lab and design courses throughout the curriculum. The choice between oral communication and technical writing depends on which engineering program and university the student chooses to attend. Students should discuss this with their advisor.

Mathematics

Students’ Accuplacer score for Mathematics will determine their placement in the Math sequence, beginning with MATH-115 Intermediate Algebra-Applications through MATH-188 Calculus I . Students who place at the beginning of the Math sequence will need to complete 11 additional credit hours of coursework to complete the degree requirements.
