Creative Writing Certificate

This certificate is designed for students who are committed to their writing and is ideal for those who are planning to apply to a B.A. or M.F.A. writing program in the future or for those who simply wish to develop a portfolio of writing. Students must earn a C or better in all certificate coursework.

Pre-requisite Courses: 3 credits

ENGL-111 Freshman Composition 3 cr.

Core Courses: 6 credits

ENGL-230 Southwest Literature 3 cr.

ENGL-250 Teaching Writing 3 cr.
ENGL-251 American Literature to 1865 3 cr.
ENGL-252 American Literature From 1865 to Present 3 cr.
ENGL-261 Survey of World Literature I 3 cr.
ENGL-262 Survey of World Literature II 3 cr.

Creative Writing Courses: 9 credits

Choose 9 credits from the following:

ENGL-221 Creative Writing: Fiction 3 cr.
ENGL-222 Creative Writing: Poetry 3 cr.
ENGL-223 Creative Writing: Creative Nonfiction 3 cr.
ENGL-280 Advanced Creative Writing by Genre 3 cr.
ENGL-299 Special Topics 1-4 cr.
COMM-131 Writing for Mass Media 3 cr.
