The following General Education requirements should be completed by all students seeking an Associate of Arts degree from San Juan College. Any General Education requirements that are specific to a program are noted with the program requirements. If a General Education course is part of the program curriculum, the course will only be counted for the program requirement.

In addition, students who complete the 35 credits required for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program will be eligible for the General Education Transfer Certificate.

Area I: Communications: Select 9 credits

ENGL-111 Freshman Composition 3 cr.
ENGL-211 Advanced Composition 3 cr.
COMM-110 Public Speaking 3 cr. OR
COMM-111 Interpersonal Communication 3 cr. OR
COMM-220 Intercultural Communication 3 cr.

Area II: Mathematics: Select 3 credits

*Students should choose the Mathematics course for their AA based upon the degree they plan to pursue at a four year college or university. The mathematics sequence requires that the student either place directly into MATH 160 or MATH 170 on the Accuplacer OR complete MATH 115 as a prerequisite. Students who place at the MATH 115 level will need to complete 4 additional credit hours of course work. MATH 115 does NOT meet the mathematics general education requirement for an AA.
