Alternative Teacher Licensure Certificate

This is a four semester post-baccalaureate program designed for adults who are highly motivated to become teachers. To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet New Mexico Public Education Department and San Juan College criteria for admittance: Bachelor’s degree with minimum of 30 semester credits applicable to the licensure area sought, or master’s degree with minimum of 12 graduate credits in applicable licensure area, or doctorate degree in applicable area. Prospective candidates must take and pass the NES Essential Academic Skills subtests I-III (Reading, Writing, and Math) in order to be fully accepted and qualified to apply for an intern license from the NMPED licensure department.

Full Acceptance into the Program:

  1. Passage of the NES Essential Academic Skills subtests I-III
  2. Completed application packet (including official transcripts)
  3. Transcript review requirements for academic degree content met
  4. In-person interview with program staff
  5. Signed candidate agreement

 

Participants who complete all courses and program requirements receive a certificate of completion to accompany their application to the State Public Education Department to obtain an Alternative License for K-8 elementary or 7-12 secondary or K-12 special education. Courses from other education programs may substitute for courses in this program. Courses from this program may not be accepted by other colleges. For ALP candidates seeking dual licensure in both Elementary and Secondary Education, only one field experience course is required (either EDUC 277  or EDUC 275  ). Dual licensure in Special Education requires two field experience course (EDUC 279  and EDUC 277  or EDUC 275  ).

Students must earn a C or better in all coursework and must earn at least a B in their Field Experience course in order to earn an ALP certificate.
