Manicuring, Pedicuring, and Nail Enhancements Certificate

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

1. Perform professional manicures and pedicures using current industry techniques and standards.
2. Apply artificial nail enhancements including tips, wraps, acrylics, gels, and related nail systems.
3. Demonstrate proper nail shaping, cuticle care, polish application, and nail art techniques.
4. Identify nail disorders and diseases and recognize conditions requiring referral.
5. Apply infection control, sanitation, and disinfection procedures in accordance with state regulations.
6. Conduct client consultations and recommend appropriate nail services and retail products.
7. Demonstrate professionalism, communication skills, ethics, and customer service.
8. Complete 600 clock hours minimum to qualify for the state nail technician licensing examination.

The Manicuring program is designed to meet the standards established by the New Mexico State board of Barbers and Cosmetologists. Covers the theory and lab activities performed in salon business and retail sales as they relate to manicuring. Meets the minimum of 400 clock hours required by the Barbers and Cosmetology State Board. Consist of the health and well-being of fingernails, toenails and added artificial enhancements. Presents the history of nails, anatomy and nail structure with functions, diseases prevention and nail disorders. Reviews the use of nail product chemistry, electric filing, nail tips, forms, and resin systems. Also, explores artificial enhancements to extend or strengthen natural nails and the removal of those enhancements.

After successfully completing the program, students are qualified to take the New Mexico Board test for licensure. Licensing and certification for immediate employment in the field are obtained by passing this exam.

Students entering this program are required to complete appropriate basic skills classes as determined by the scores on the College’s entrance exam. This is a selective program that admits students in the fall and spring semester.

Note: A student must earn a grade of C or higher in all courses required for the program to receive a certificate.
