Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Utilize appropriate veterinary medical terminology and demonstrate effective communication with veterinary staff and clients in both written and verbal forms.
  2. Apply ethical standards, confidentiality practices, and professional behavior consistent with the veterinary healthcare environment.
  3. Identify and apply relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards governing veterinary hospitals, including OSHA, DEA, AVMA, and state veterinary boards.
  4. Explore business law concepts of social responsibility, ethical application of the law, and the relationship between ethics and the law.
  5. Design and implement client service protocols and communication strategies to improve client satisfaction, loyalty, and patient outcomes.
  6. Distinguish and describe the role of supervision in an organization and discuss effective processes in the selection of employees, training employees, and conducting performance appraisals.
  7. Create and interpret financial statements, develop budgets, and apply financial controls to support the economic sustainability and growth of a veterinary practice.

The Veterinary Practice Management certificate program is specifically designed to give students the knowledge and skills to function as a practice manager in a veterinary clinic or hospital, and to prepare them to take and successfully complete the requirements to become a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) through the Veterinary Hospital Managers Association (VHMA).
