Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Mastery of Drafting Techniques and Standards:
    1. Students will understand and apply various sketching and drawing techniques, including single-view, multi-view, and pictorial methods.
    2. They will learn to produce properly scaled, annotated, and dimensioned drawings in accordance with ANSI Y14.5 standards.
    3. Students will gain proficiency in using CAD software to create 2D technical drawings and manage drawing files, blocks, and layers.
  2. Understanding of Materials and Manufacturing Processes:
    1. Students will comprehend the structure and properties of metallic materials, including how these are affected by thermal treatment and heat-treating procedures.
    2. They will learn to machine simple mechanical parts using commonly used machine tools and conduct manufacturing studies.
    3. Students will understand welding processes, symbols, and weldment drawing formats.
  3. Proficiency in Descriptive Geometry and Spatial Relationships:
    1. Students will learn to solve descriptive geometry problems using orthographic projection and understand the spatial relationships between points, lines, and planes in 3D space.
    2. They will gain knowledge of auxiliary views, sections, and geometric tolerances, and their application in drafting.
  4. Expertise in Structural Analysis and Power Transmission:
    1. Students will study the design process for solving structural problems and analyze truss and beam structures, centroids, and moments of inertia.
    2. They will learn about primary and secondary stresses, hydraulic pressure, and power transmission devices such as belts, chains, and gears.
    3. Students will gain knowledge in bearings, seals, and lubricants.
  5. Advanced CAD Skills and Problem-Solving:
    1. Students will understand 3D modeling concepts, including wireframe, surface, and solid modeling, and learn to customize CAD menus and toolbars.
    2. They will develop skills in solving complex problems, including tolerance studies, and learn to analyze and solve right and non-right triangles using trigonometric laws and algebraic methods.
    3. Students will be able to import and export images between various software and handle dimensional analysis and unit conversions.

The Mechanical Drafting and Design degree program is intended to provide the students with a firm mathematical and scientific foundation on which to build a high degree of technological expertise in manufacturing and engineering technology.  These are skills associated with mechanical related positions in industry, engineering technology, and with the government.  A strong background in general education courses enhances the student’s understanding of society and to make progress in his/her field of choice more accessible.

Note:  Student must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses required for the program in order to receive a Drafting and Design Technology-Mechanical A.A.S. degree.

SJC First Year Experience Requirement: 3 Credits
