Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of the four classes of macromolecules.
  2. Classify the major groups of organisms and relationships to their ecosystems.
  3. Describe and apply the principles of genetics.
  4. Apply the core principles of evolution as the foundation of modern biology.
  5. Employ scientific methods and instrumentation.
  6. Demonstrate effective scientific communication.

The Associate of Science degree in Biology will provide students with principles, knowledge, and skills required to begin a career in the fields requiring biology.  Students will take courses that will introduce the many specialties within the field of biology.  Students wishing to transfer to a baccalaureate granting institution and pursue a degree in Biology are strongly encouraged to check with their advisor and coordinate their course work at San Juan College with the requirements of the transfer institution.  

Note:  Student must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses to obtain the Associate of Science degree in Biology.

SJC First Year Experience Requirement: 3 Credits
