Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate ability to recognize and explain major concepts in Native Studies that relate to art, culture, and language and apply the concepts to Native lives and issues.
- Identify and describe cultural differences in worldview that affect relationships, cause conflicts and changes between Native and non-Native peoples and systems, due to contact with European cultures.
- Link concepts and ideas, presented in course readings, to the practices of contemporary Native and non-Native Societies in order to understand the legacy of our predecessors and to discuss institutional relationship, cultural conflicts, and tribal values of today.
- Explain and analyze Native American perspectives and experiences to gain a deeper understanding of one’s culture and be able to make connections with other people’s cultural experiences.
- Describe the Western theories, styles, and trends of managements and leadership and discuss how they compare or contrast to tribal society’s cultural teachings, management, and leadership.
The Associate of Arts degree in Native Studies will provide students with principles, knowledge, and skills required to begin a career in the fields requiring Native American Studies. Students wishing to transfer to a baccalaureate granting institution and pursue a degree in Native Studies are strongly encouraged to check with their advisor and coordinate their coursework at San Juan College with the requirements of the transfer institution.
Note: Students must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses to obtain a Native Studies A.A. degree.

SJC First Year Experience Requirement: 3 Credits
General Education Requirements: 31 Credits
Social/Behavioral Science:
Program Core Requirements: 12 Credits
Program Core Electives: 12-14 Credits
Choose four courses from below for a total of 12-14 credits: One course (3 credits) from the Literature and Art category; two courses (6-8 credits) from the Culture, History, and Language category; and one additional course (3-4 credits) from either category. Culture, History, and Language
Additional Elective: 3-5 Credits
- Any course numbered 1110 or higher - 3-5 Credits to meet 60 credit minimum for degree
TOTAL DEGREE REQUIREMENTS: 61-63 Credits
