Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Recognize the impact of substance abuse on individuals and society.
- Describe treatment and recovery approaches for substance abuse issues.
- List social worker roles in substance abuse interventions.
- Compare history and philosophies of substance abuse treatment and recovery.
- Interpret core values and ethics in substance abuse practice.
- Apply substance abuse intervention skills in community non-profit organizations.
- Demonstrate the importance of culturally sensitive care in substance abuse.
The Associate of Arts degree in Human Services-Substance Abuse will provide students with principles, knowledge, and skills required to begin a career in the field of human services or substance abuse. Students wishing to transfer to a baccalaureate granting institution and pursue a degree in Human Services or Substance Abuse are strongly encouraged to check with their advisor and coordinate their course work at San Juan College with the requirements of the transfer institution. In general, however, it is suggested that students complete the New Mexico Transfer Module as outlined below.
Note: Student must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses to obtain a Human Services-Substance Abuse A.A. degree.
