Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in aseptic technique. Apply sterile technique principles and infection control protocols to maintain a safe surgical environment and prevent patient harm.
  2. Prepare and manage the surgical environment effectively. Independently prepare the operating room, including instrumentation setup, case cart preparation, equipment arrangement, and surgical supplies selection based on the procedure.
  3. Position and prepare the patient for surgical intervention. Safely position and prepare patients for surgery in accordance with procedural requirements, anatomical considerations, and patient safety standards.
  4. Assist the surgical team during operative procedures. Function as a critical member of the surgical team by anticipating surgeon needs, passing instruments efficiently, maintaining sterile field integrity, and ensuring optimal patient care outcomes.
  5. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation. Identify and apply the appropriate instruments, supplies, and procedural steps for various surgical specialties, based on evidence-based practices.
  6. Communicate and collaborate effectively in the perioperative setting. Exhibit professional communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills in high-pressure, fast-paced operating room environments.
  7. Apply ethical, legal, and professional standards in surgical technology. Uphold the ethical responsibilities, legal scope of practice, and professional standards expected of a surgical technologist, including respect for patient rights and confidentiality.
  8. Demonstrate readiness for national certification. Meet the competencies required to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) national certification examination.

This program is designed to instruct students in the tasks and responsibilities of a surgical technologist in the operating room.  Areas of study will include, but are not limited to, aseptic technique, positioning of patients, preparation of instrumentation, pulling of case carts, setting up rooms, and assisting surgeons.  By the end of the degree studies, the student will be able to independently prepare for a procedure and assist the surgeon in a great patient care outcome. 

Students who successfully complete the courses will be eligible to take the national certification examination of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Note:  Student must earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all courses to obtain a Surgical Technology A.A.S. degree.
