San Juan College offers an Online/Hybrid Physical Therapist Assistant Program leading to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. The program emphasizes the academic knowledge and clinical skills necessary to practice as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA). Graduates are eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for Physical Therapist Assistants.

Program graduates may also pursue advanced educational opportunities, including baccalaureate degrees in related fields or the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Advanced Proficiency Pathways for PTAs. Becoming a PTA is not a direct pathway to becoming a Physical Therapist (PT). However, some “bridge” programs in the United States may offer opportunities to transition from a PTA to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) with additional requirements. For more information, please contact the Physical Therapist Assistant Program at pta@sanjuancollege.edu or visit https://www.sanjuancollege.edu/education-training/programs/physical-therapist-assistant-aas/.

Program Expectations

Students accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant Program must follow the prescribed course sequence to remain in and complete the program.

All students are required to complete full-time clinical externships as outlined in the course sequence.

Online/Hybrid students may be required to complete selected skills virtually. These activities involve practicing with another individual serving in the role of patient. Students are responsible for arranging their own partner, which may include family members, friends, or coworkers.

On-Campus Lab Requirements
Students must travel to the San Juan College campus for the lab portion of their courses. Lab sessions occur over five consecutive semesters, beginning with the fall semester of admission. Each lab session requires approximately 7-16 consecutive days on campus (including weekends). Students are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and related expenses.

Exam Proctoring
Lecture exams in the PTA Program use virtual and/or live proctoring services, which may include identity verification, room scans, and proctor monitoring. Online courses at San Juan College include a student fee to support proctoring services; however, additional fees may apply if live proctoring is required.

Course Sequence

The sequence of prerequisite courses (Fall 1 through Spring 1) is suggested. The sequence of PTAP courses (Fall 2 through Spring 3) is required.

Students who are unable to follow the suggested prerequisite course sequence should meet with a Health Sciences academic advisor for guidance. Students who are unable to follow the required PTAP course sequence must meet with the Program Director to discuss options, which may include alternate educational pathways.
