Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  1. Understand and Use GIS Software and Tools: This includes proficiency in industry-standard GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and other mapping tools. Students should be able to perform spatial analysis, create maps, and manage geospatial data effectively.
  2. Apply Geospatial Analysis Techniques: Students should be able to analyze spatial data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships. This involves understanding geospatial distribution, clustering, and other analytical methods that are crucial for making informed decisions in various fields such as urban planning, environmental science, and logistics.
  3. Interpret and Create Maps: the ability to interpret existing maps and create new ones that effectively communicate geospatial information. It includes understanding map projections, datums, and coordinate systems, as well as the principles of cartographic design. Students present geospatial data in a clear and meaningful way.
  4. Integrate Geospatial Image Analyses: Students should be able to use remote sensing techniques and digital satellite/aerial imagery within a GIS framework. This involves understanding how to acquire, process, and analyze imagery to extract valuable geospatial information.
  5. Conduct Field Surveys and Collect Geospatial Data: This outcome involves hands-on skills in field surveying, including the use of GPS and other surveying instruments. Students should be able to collect accurate geospatial data.

The Geographic Information Systems Technology (GIST) degree and certificate programs at San Juan College offer students a solid education to pursue a career in the rapidly growing field of geospatial sciences or to develop new skills for their current profession.

Virtually every sector and government is using geographic information to make more informed decisions based on better geographic knowledge.  Job opportunities in the geospatial sciences exist locally in San Juan County, as well as in the State of New Mexico, and nationally and internationally.

Geospatial science includes geographic information systems (GIS), the global positioning system (GPS), and the remote sensing of satellite and aerial imagery among other mapping technologies.  Together these tools are used to collect, manage, and analyze geographic information and allow us to make better decisions about our world.
