General Education Requirements for Associate of Applied Science Degrees


The State of New Mexico requires that students seeking an Associate of Applied Science complete a minimum of 15 credits from at least 4 of the following areas with an additional 3 credits from one of these areas or another, approved area.

Area 1:  Communications: 3 credits

Area 2:  Mathematics:  3 -4 credits

Area 3:  Laboratory Science: 4 credits

Area 4:  Social/Behavioral Science:  3 credits

Area 5:  Humanities: 3 credits

Area 6:  Fine Arts: 3 credits

Other: 3 credits or an additional 3 credits from one of the other areas above

Each program has designated specific general education requirements for students in the program.  Please consult your program requirements as you choose your general education courses.

The following courses are courses that meet general education requirements for A.A.S. programs.

Laboratory Science: 4 Credits


Social/Behavioral Science: 3 Credits


Minimum 3 credits, maximum 6 credits.

Humanities: 3 Credits


Fine Arts: 3 Credits


Other: 3 Choose 3 Credits from one area above or take


TOTAL REQUIREMENTS: 15 Credits
